- Web Site Design & Redesign
This is what I spend most of my time doing. Effective web site design requires attention to detail, flexibility, and the willingness to learn new things.
Having been in business since 1999, I have had the opportunity to redesign some of my own work. This is a special challenge because the client already likes their web site, so the goal is to do a better job than I did previously.
Take a look at Camp Greystone. This is my third redesign for the camp's web site. The previous design used a frameset to keep the logo and navigation present at the top and bottom of the page but in this redesign we wanted to make the site more accessible (especially to search engines).
Framesets are very bad for search engines yet they are useful for keeping important content visible.
Using CSS I found a way to emulate the behavior of a frameset for modern browsers while opening the site up to search engines. The new design accommodates Internet Explorer by allowing the header & footer to scroll. When IE catches up the site won't break - it will improve!
- Flash & QuickTime Multimedia
Flash is an amazing tool when it is used wisely - and sparingly. A great example of what you can do with Flash is Greystone's Interactive Map.
This project uses Flash to display an artist's rendering of the camp. Because the map has so much detail, I set up two views - one showing the entire map and another zooming in to see greater detail.
When you click on a location a pop-up launches (inside the Flash map). The pop-ups are driven by plain text files and the photos are driven by XML - all of which makes it very easy to update.
The site also uses QuickTime to display videos. One of the beautiful features of QuickTime is its ability to play video as it downloads - giving the benefit of streaming without the requirement of a special server.
